SwimSwam announced a recruiting database holding a snapshot of where college-bound swimmers and divers come from and where they are headed. Sortable by club team, college, conference, home state, school, LSC, and an open-ended "etc."

What ran through my head was November 2026, the outdoor Mirpur complex, the National Swimming Championship. The only woman in that press row, asked twice by an official whether I was "someone's guest." I did not answer. I counted. Seventy-six golds: Navy 44, Army 19, BKSP 9, and civilian clubs sharing four. Two Rajshahi Division entries, zero finals. I filed a table, not a report.

I counted the golds in Mirpur because the cheering felt rented. Now an American outlet is counting something else — not medals, but talent. Which club feeds which conference. So the real question is not simple: which ledger actually runs the sport?

What the Database Is, and What It Is Not

Nothing here measures performance. No times, no events, no splits, no records, no named athlete, no nation, no meet. No anti-doping, no eligibility dispute, no injury. This is a product announcement, credited to Anne Lepesant.

What exists is architecture: six named sort fields plus an undisclosed "etc." The publisher calls it a snapshot — aggregation, not verification. Update cadence, coverage criteria and verification method are all unstated. That matters because US college recruiting is a rolling, non-binding, portal-disrupted market. Verbal commitments do not bind. The National Letter of Intent has given way to written offer and financial-aid agreements. The transfer portal lets a committed athlete re-enter the market in the same cycle. The House v. NCAA roster-limit model is rewriting Olympic-sport roster sizes. A database laid over that market is a different object than a register laid over a federation.

The Architecture of Counting

A list of commitments is not new; the ability to sort it is. Commitments are scattered across social posts and local coverage. Consolidating them into one filterable index converts information into an instrument. The added value is data architecture, not content.

The dual club-plus-LSC key is the smartest design choice here. LSC is USA Swimming's regional governance layer, between club and federation. Indexing an athlete to both club and region means the product is documenting two layers of the pyramid at once — which makes longitudinal pipeline research possible. If retained across classes, that is not editorial content. It is a census.

The conference field tells you who the users are. Casual readers do not filter by conference. Coaches, recruiting analysts and recruiting-obsessed fans do. And with realignment churning, that field will break historical comparability the moment membership shifts again.

What is omitted is itself the biggest datum. A snapshot without a timestamp has no measurable decay rate. Undisclosed coverage creates a false sense of completeness. Undisclosed verification means no external audit. This is an editorial aggregation, not an administrative register.

A commitment is not an outcome, and the field set has no room for outcomes. No post-enrollment performance, transfer or attrition fields are described, so the dataset cannot measure its own predictive validity. That is a genre limit, not a flaw.

And in women's swimming, commitments are often made before the puberty barrier resolves. The database records projected value, not realized value.

One Label That Could Invert a Whole Cohort

The source material carried a discrepancy: the title says 2028, while a summary viewpoint referred to a "Class of 20268." One of these is a transcription error. Two years of drift means a different cohort, different roster-limit environment, different conference map, different transfer cycle. In a data product, errors are the controversy. I am applying to my own work the same warning I keep applying to the federation: verify before you conclude.

Our Mirror

My 2026 tally sheet — medals sorted by source — was a crude ancestor of this database. I was asking who hands out medals and who receives the advantage. The American product pushes one step earlier: who goes where, and where the current originates.

We have none of it. No verified register of which district produces how many swimmers, which club sends how many to national level, which division enters how many and how many reach finals. No follow-up data on SwimSafe-style graduates. No public ledger on BKSP, Navy or Army conversion rates.

Our counting is of a different kind. During the 2026 Russia World Cup the Dhaka desk ran sixteen pages of group-stage previews and gave the National Age Group Championship nine lines. I went to the river and watched char-dwelling children learn to swim in current, not lanes. The ledger split in two: podium counting, and drowning counting — roughly forty children a day. The World Cup ate the newsroom, so I wrote about drowning instead. The database is our mirror: they count a supply chain of talent; we count a supply chain of death. In both, the question is who gets counted.

How I Could Be Wrong

First, I may be inflating a product announcement into infrastructure. It may simply be an SEO asset and a subscriber-retention tool, and my structural reading may be lending theological weight to a marketing decision.

Second, and uncomfortably: the "20268" may be my transcription error, not SwimSwam's. A journalist who tells everyone to verify data, then mislabels a system on his own sheet, is not diagnosing a publisher — he is diagnosing himself.

Third, my Bangladeshi skepticism may just be resentment. I have spent years telling the federation to publish provenance. Now an American outlet is doing that tedious, unglamorous work. Sneering at it is ungrateful. The work is small, and it is right.

Fourth, I may be imposing an unrealistic standard. Demanding a live register from a volunteer editorial product is unreasonable. A timestamped snapshot is honest, and honesty matters more than completeness. The cadence may be published already, just missing from my summary.

What survives all four objections is this: the value of this database lies not in its content but in its continuity. A snapshot of one cohort is a news item. A series of cohorts is a history.

What to Watch

Two things over the next twenty-four months. One: whether a last-updated timestamp and a methodology note appear, stating inclusion criteria, sources and decommitment handling. Two: whether historical classes are retained.

If both happen, by 2030 this becomes a de facto census of US collegiate swimming intake, and clubs will compete to place themselves correctly in that filter. If neither happens, it stays a traffic asset, and we will regret that the bridge between data and insight was never built.

Our test is harsher. If the Bangladesh Swimming Federation does not publish a verified provenance table before the 2027 National Championship — which club, which district, which services team entered how many, how many reached finals, how many dropped off last year's list — we lose another generation. The scoreboard is a bad historian, but a great witness. Right now the witness is silent, and I cannot yet tell whether it is withholding testimony or simply never learned to count.
